Avocado Pudding

The type of pudding I remember eating as a child came directly from those square plastic containers that probably sat on the shelves of the supermarket for weeks.  This same pudding was endorsed ad nauseum in the 1980's by Bill Cosby in those iconic commercial's where he's featured licking the chocolate Jello "puddin'" off his spoon while surrounded by dozens of salivating kids.  It's probably safe to say every brown bag school lunch packed by Mom contained a jello pudding accompaniment for dessert. My go to chocolate pudding as a kid....and a … [Read more...]

Quick and Easy Coffee Cake

For 10 summers at camp, I’d wake up every Sunday morning and head to the dining hall where I’d indulge in a vast buffet boasting the most amazing coffee cake. It was served warm, super moist, with a sinfully sweet crumbly cake topping. It was so good, you simply could not eat just one piece. At that point, I’d break the rules. Apple Clafoutis

When I first started sorting through Mom’s recipes, I circled all of the words that (at the time) were completely meaningless to me.  Among them: parboiled, pin prick, blanched and CLAFOUTIS. Almost two years later, I’ve since parboiled, pin pricked, blanched and just yesterday, made my first clafoutis!  How exciting. In my kitchen-clueless mind, Clafloutis sounded more like some sort of tree fungus rather than a celebrated baked custard French dessert.  Apparently, a traditional clafoutis contains cherries arranged in a buttered dish … [Read more...]

Mom’s Chocolate Chip Mondel Bread

Let's face it, most desserts that are kosher for Passover don't seem that appealing. How good could they be without flour and baking soda and baking powder? After just getting back from a week long vacation in Italy, it's the same as eating a pizza without the tomato sauce--- you're more aware of what's missing than what you have. There's nothing appealing about this display- neither the sign, nor the flavorless treats in the boxes However, one of my favorite Passover desserts is Chocolate Chip Mandel Bread. Maybe that's because I'm … [Read more...]
